Burnished California

Here are pictures I took today on my seven-mile hike with Anna in Tilden Park. My mother-in-law, Helen, once referred to the dry, summer hills of California as “burnished,” which (she would have known) derives from a Middle English word for “brown.” I’ve always thought it was an evocative description of the shine of brittle grasses at this time of year. Narcolepsy

Saturday I decided to drive to Grass Valley to see Teej & Richard at the Rancho. The three of us got to yacking and stayed up way past our bedtimes—till about 3:00. Muscles

My poor little muscles have gone all floppy this week as they’ve sat around watching me work on the computer.
