What a grand birthday it’s been. I got plenty of attention, even by my demanding standards. I communicated with my mommy, my daughters, my grandkids, my siblings, and my closest friends. I got cards and e-mails from people I care about, and even flowers from Vicki and Susie B. Everyone who knows me knows that I desperately want to be indulged on my birthday, and I was. I don’t have a buttload of friends, but those I have are the best anyone could ask for.
Anna and Frank dropped by a birthday cake and some goodies for me in the morning. She had meant to bring two “six” candles for my 66 years, but one turned out to be a nine.
Not long after, I had a huge surprise: for the first time in over three months, I saw Molly and her fella, once again in the backyard. Frustrating not to be able to get close and hug my own girl, but I’m not complaining. Midday, I went for a socially distanced walk with my good friend/old BF, Nick. And later in the day, while I was sitting in the yard with Bessie, Adi & Michael unexpectedly appeared through my gate. My yard has lots of room for us to stay far apart, and I was beside myself with joy at seeing such important people. I feel lucky.
Right before I blew out the candles on my cake, with Molly and Elana in attendance, we all did a spontaneous little dance, as I hummed a Christmas tune for accompaniment.
During the weekly Zoom chat with my daughters, grandson Jesse joined us and told me something he’d figured out:
When people get old, they die, he informed me earnestly, and then paused before adding, Like you, Mama Ginna. I pointed out that I likely have a few years left in me.
My sister’s present to me was a clock she’d made out of a cow pie from the hollers of south-central West Virginia.
On Facebook I found this video of my first (and only) skydive, on my birthday nine years ago. I don’t know what possessed me. [Thank you, Lulu, for figuring out how to download this from Facebook when I was stymied.]
Thank you, friends and family, for warming the cockles of my jaded little heart.
And thank you, Eleni, for your continuing reassurance about and insight into my ongoing Bessie concerns.
i’m SO glad your day was a happy one — you deserve it!!
Happy HAPPY birthday, tiny squish! It was so wonderful to get to see you – in PERSON! – even from a distance!
And I’m glad I got to meet Bessie. She is a sweet girl.
I adore Katie’s cow pie clock. What a marvel.
Thank you so much for being born!
OMG I’d forgotten you did that. Brava!
Hahahahaha! Cow pie clock!!!! That’s hilarious!
I’m happy you felt the love.
