Day 34: The Verdict

This just in: the toilet paper contest is over, and if your bets were on the Charmin Mega—with its boast that each roll is equivalent to four of the competitors’—you’re bound to be disappointed. Costco’s Kirkland roll lasted 7.5 days, versus Charmin’s mere 7.334.

Elegant in my sugar-skull mask, I walked fifteen minutes through the grey morning to the farmers market again, arriving at the start of senior hour. I wonder if people there are getting a false sense of security from all the face-coverings; a few masked shoppers crept up unnervingly close behind me in line, not respecting the six-foot rule, whereas last week that wasn’t the case. Securing food has become a stressful experience. I’ve not been to the grocery store in over ten days. I dread the lines and empty shelves and the process of navigating safely around others through narrow aisles. I used to order groceries online but no longer can, since items and delivery slots are always sold out. But while successfully placing an order is sort of like winning the lottery, Molly worked her magic today to help her bewildered, addled mother. Thanks to her skill and luck, I expect to find bounty at my door tomorrow. I’ll be curious to see what they’re sold out of.

Highlight of the day: Zoom chat with my girls and my grandkids.

I got another Facebook message from the woman for whom I attempted those two drawings of her dogs. She sent me yet another blurry picture of her exceptionally hard-to-render pup. There was no accompanying text, so I’m just guessing she’s asking me to try again, since the last didn’t come out so well. I tried one final time, but the sketch looks very little like the original subject. Once again, the curly creature is facing the camera directly so I can’t see its snout.

Finally, it’s time for a trip down Memory Lane. When I was small I used to listen to Bozo Under the Sea, a series of 78 r.p.m. records that had an accompanying picture book to flip through as the story progressed. My family’s favorite character was always Mrs. Weakfish, and I’ll bet Ma and my sibs can still do a pretty good impression. You’ll find her at 3:14. Molly: Thanks for reminding me about this and inspiring me to search for it online. Eleni: Maybe your kids would enjoy this archaic form of entertainment?
