Day 33: Nostrils

Yesterday my county was one of several in the Bay Area that issued a mandate (upgraded from a recommendation) for people to wear face-coverings in public. Enforcement starts in four days.

Bay Area residents could soon face a criminal charge as a “menace to public health” that is “punishable by fine, imprisonment, or both” for refusing to wear cloth face coverings in public settings… [The rules] don’t generally require people wear face coverings for outdoor recreation such as walking, hiking, bicycling or running.

I guess making it mandatory is the only way to get some people to take it seriously. No changes to my routine, but still rather Twilight Zone-y out there. I infer that it’s okay to continue strolling in the neighborhood without a mask, but I’m not positive. With one, when I’m walking fast, it’s tricky to get enough oxygen.

Today I had planned to wing my way to the East Coast to see Small for the first time in a little over six months. Fingers are crossed that our July visit comes to pass.

As promised, I’m going to show you the sketch I did for Ember of her handsome dog, a German Shepherd-influenced mutt. I’d asked her to take some photos: maybe some nice profiles that give me solid outlines to work with. It was not to be. Instead, she got Yuba face-on with snout thrust right smack into the camera lens.

And here’s Yuba again. I started the drawing in the lower-right corner of the page and promptly ran out of room.

Yuba is named thus because she was rescued, nearly drowned, from a flooded Feather River in Yuba City last September. Some kind soul with a motorboat managed to pluck her from her precarious perch. She was taken to a shelter and, because she showed some signs of aggression in the kennel, was slated to be euthanized. Jump to the end of the story: she is now a much-beloved member of my daughter’s household. I wonder what she thinks of water now.

A Facebook friend posted the following video, which I’ve sent to some of you by e-mail. I’ll put it here for posterity. As an old hippie, I just think it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Well, okay, the funniest thing since the pandemic. You know how I love guinea pigs, and particularly their lips. You’ll find both here:

On that note, I’ll bid you adieu for today.

  1. In answer to your (rhetorical?) question: she loves water–the hose, the bath, the wading pool. I’m unsure if it’s because she’s brave or stupid.
You could get away with selling your portraits. For real.

  2. Fingers crossed indeed about July. Yeeesh.

I like your Yubas, particularly the first. The eyes are very soft and sweet. What an impressive origin story she has!

  3. Omg the Yuba nose! And I didn’t know her story – what a lucky sweet doggie. That video gave me a real good giggle when you shared it with me *grins
