Waiting for Ember

Before dinner in Sacramento tonight I had a sudden panic: must eat and head to the Bay Area. As I drove onto the freeway I called Eleni. A minute into the conversation her water broke. No one has ever made it to Oakland in less time than I did. Picked up Jason & E and got to Kaiser ER where we were admitted pronto, amid choruses of “congratulations” and “good luck.” Shortly after, Lulu arrived from the Valley. And here we remain, eight-plus hours later. Eleni wisely chose an epidural. We’re all extremely cranky from sleep deprivation. Doc just said 8 cm so it shouldn’t be too long, we all hope. We had the nicest nurse here till a few minutes ago. The giggling and silliness (before we all got grumpy) seemed to entertain her. When she left she wished the happy couple all the best, thanked us for being entertaining, and said, “I’ll still be laughing after I get home today. You’ve given me lots to laugh about.” She pointed to me. “Especially you.” I don’t think she meant that she found me laughable.

I’m way too tired. We could be here a while. Pix later.
