Burnished California

Here are pictures I took today on my seven-mile hike with Anna in Tilden Park. My mother-in-law, Helen, once referred to the dry, summer hills of California as “burnished,” which (she would have known) derives from a Middle English word for “brown.” I’ve always thought it was an evocative description of the shine of brittle grasses at this time of year.

  1. I know the pond in that picture. I was there when the fog was pouring over the hill top and it became one of those summer-time winter days. I wanted to swim in it but figured it was mostly cow piss so didn’t. Usually I do just to sample the water. Getting old, I guess. Cow piss could be very therapeutic. Who knows. Rejuvenating?
