Burnished California

Here are pictures I took today on my seven-mile hike with Anna in Tilden Park. My mother-in-law, Helen, once referred to the dry, summer hills of California as “burnished,” which (she would have known) derives from a Middle English word for “brown.” I’ve always thought it was an evocative description of the shine of brittle grasses at this time of year.
