The Making of Plans

It almost never happens any more: that churning of the stomach that comes from anticipating something new and good. Tonight’s iChat with Jill had that effect.

Meet Jill: Jill — Blog. Blog — Jill. Here she is with something she and her fella Lewis found in the wilds in Nicaragua.

Jill’s been wandering around Central America for the past six months. Here’s a wee bit of our online conversation, which will show you why I’m excited.

G: Where are you?

J: in san jose…

J: costa rica

G: Oh, THAT San Jose.

J: had a great time in santa rosa national park in the north of costa rica… we found 30 snakes… there were monkeys and agoutis and coatis and lots of birds. creepy crawlies too.

G: Cool!!!!!!!!! What’s next?

J: we are heading to corcovado down in the oso peninsula for about 10 days of camping. then we plan to do 2 to 4 weeks volunteer work there. i am hoping to come meet you in guatemala. i was going to suggest you come to the oso peninsula as it is the most diverse place in all of central america. it has the most flora and fauna. but it is rather remote and i´m not sure how much hiking you want to do…

G: That could be a blast!! What country? Costa Rica?

J: yeah, but it is at the very southwest tip. so do you have any idea what you will do after school in guate?

G: Wide open. Would like to see Tikal and/or Copan and/or Coban. But no plans.

J: you should put semuc champay on your list too. a large underground river. very beautiful. i would like to come up and at least see you before you leave.

G: I’ve always been curious about Costa Rica.

J: well if you can afford to fly to costa rica we could go anywhere. if you don´t want to travel all the way down to oso. there is arenal the volcano. monte verde cloud forest which is beautiful. canopy tours if you like! butterflies and hummingbirds abound. and a serpentarium. there are heaps of parks that are not that difficult to get to.

G: Wouldn’t that be a blast!

J: yeah, costa rica would be great! lewis would love to see you too. he was bugging me to get you to come to corcovado area but it all depends on how much walking you can do and if you have a backpack. we have to come back to san jose in the beginning of feb anyway and we can meet you there. check out http://www.corcovado.org. you have to hike or fly or take a boat in.

G: Just looked at the home page. Man… I wanna go.

J: you need a mossie net…

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Mosquito net, hell. I just looked at her photos of Costa Rica. Why do all the places I want to go have this one fatal flaw:
